West Denver TU has a long-standing relationship with the Windy Peak Outdoor Lab (part of Jefferson County Public Schools), dating back almost 20 years. We helped construct the pond and docks on the site. We present a program for sixth graders where we teach stream ecology, aquatic entomology, conservation, and fly tying. Then we take the students fishing. The course outline, all of the tools and materials for fly tying, and the rods for fishing are provided by the chapter.
As a volunteer, you would either lead a discussion about stream ecology, demo fly tying, or help students fish. Generally, you start as a fishing helper and observe the discussion and fly tying portions.
We generally teach two classes per day, 9-12 and 1-4. Lunch with the students is provided by the Lab School.
This is a fun day with some really great Jeffco students. You will return feeling good about our future.
