Lauren is the Abandoned Mine Restoration Project Manager for Trout Unlimited. She educated us on the huge number of abandoned mines in Colorado, and about point sources and surface runoff. Restoration efforts usually involve directing water runoff. Either tailings piles are moved so that water doesn’t run through them, or water flows are channeled away from the tailings. Wetlands are also constructed that filter harmful metals before the water reaches the streams. It was an interesting and informative meeting.
