SUMMARY:Women's Fly Fishing Class
DESCRIPTION:Our Chapter is making a concerted effort to get more women involved in the beautiful sport of fly fishing.  Chapter member Geri Reffel is our designated Women’s Fly Fishing Coordinator\, and she is setting up a number of fly fishing classes for women this year.\nShe has scheduled her first class on August 14 at Lake Lehow (Waterton Canyon).  The class will kick off at 9 AM and finish about 2:30 PM\, with a lunch break in between.  Fly rods/reels will be provided for those who don’t have their own equipment.  Because Lake Lehow is a private lake\, no State fishing license is required.\nIf you believe you’re interested in taking this class and/or want more information\, please contact Geri at greffel@yahoo.com.  She can provide you with more details about this class such as what to bring with you and directions to the Lake.  This should be a fun class—tell your friends about it.

He has been fishing all his life and is passionate about teaching and sharing his experience and knowledge with others. \nAs an International Federation of Fly Fishers Certified Casting Instructor\, Adam has worked with people of varying skill levels to introduce them to fly fishing and help them perfect the art of casting. Adam competes in distance fly casting but spends most of his days fishing tenkara. He believes tenkara is the perfect venue for becoming an excellent angler as it allows you to focus on reading water\, fish habitat\, presentation and landing fish. \n  \n\nGuest Fly Tier: Judson Knowles\nJudson has been tying and fly fishing since he was 8 years old. He is a husband\, a father\, a lover of the outdoors\, and a catcher of fish\, sometimes…\nHe was lucky enough to attend the Beginner & Intermediate Fly Tying classes taught by Ray Johnson in Southern California in the late 70’s. The first fish he caught on a fly was a sucker on a Renegade that he had tied in class.  That feeling has never left; the excitement and joy are still present\, even today\, hundreds of trout later. \nJudson says “I am amazed every time I catch a fish on a fly that I have tied. It isn’t so much that I have “fooled” nature\, it is more about something I had offered up\, made of twisted fur and feather that was deemed “good enough” by a wary trout lurking below.  I love to share fly tying with others and gain just as much as I give. I have a heart for soft hackles and woven body flies.  I find fly tying relaxing\, sometimes frustrating but it always rewarding”.

SUMMARY:Clear Creek Clean Up Project
DESCRIPTION:Once again\, our Stream Clean Up effort will be part of the Clear Creek Watershed Festival held at Courtney-Ryley-Cooper Park in Idaho Springs. We will be teamed with volunteers from Cherry Creek Anglers and West Denver TU Chapters. We plan to work cleaning up the stream from Starbucks in the East to Dumont on the West. We need 20 to 30 volunteers to help make this project a success. Please bring waders and work gloves. Garbage bags and safety vests will be provided. \nTo entice you to join us we will have coffee and doughnuts at our Passport Station at 8:30 am.  The work starts at 9:00 am. For your participation you will earn a free BBQ lunch. Her grandmother taught her how to put a worm on a hook…needless to say she’s enjoyed fishing ever since. She started fly fishing when her husband and two boys moved to Colorado. Their favorite trip was to Yellowstone for fall break. It’s been 20+ years now and their family still enjoys fishing together. \nJanine enjoys sharing her love for fly fishing especially with other women and beginners sharing her passion for nature\, the beauty of a mountain stream and catching something wild in a wild place. Helping to watch a fly hit the water and see a trout take the fly transports you to another place\, away from the cares of normal life. \n  \n\nGuest Knot Tier: Jim Chase\nIn a twist on our normal program\, our guest fly tier will be replaced by a knot tying demonstration by Jim Chase.  Jim is Co-Director of our Fishing Buddy program\, long time fly fisherman and avowed knot geek.  Drop by early and perhaps pick up a new knot or two.

His love affair with fly-fishing began at an early age when he learned to fish on the beaver ponds of Buffalo Creek\, CO. near his grandfather’s hotel. Summers spent fishing and storytelling on the hotel porch remain as fond childhood memories. It came as no surprise to Kerry’s parents when he announced his dream of one day becoming a professional fly fisherman. These rich experiences\, steeped in Colorado tradition\, formed the foundation of Kerry’s passion for fly-fishing for wild trout on all the South Platte drainages–a passion which remains strong today. \n  \n \nPat Dorsey has been fly-fishing for selective trout for over thirty-five years. His vast knowledge and expertise makes him a true authority in the fly-fishing industry.  Pat Dorsey is one of the co-owners of the Blue Quill Angler\, a full-service fly shop and guide service\, serving customers from the same location in Evergreen\, Colorado since 1988.  Pat has been working at the Blue Quill Angler since 1992.  Throughout his journey\, his niche has always been teaching people how to fly fish. Whether you’re a novice or seasoned veteran\, a day on the water with Pat Dorsey will elevate your game to the next level. \n  \nLandon Mayer is fly fishing guide and author in the Florissant\, CO area\, calling the South Platte River his home waters. He has been guiding on these waters for the past seventeen years\, as well as one year in Alaska.  Passion and love for the sport of fly fishing is what motivates Landon. His success in catching trout is fueled by an addiction of pursuing large trout with small flies and lightweight fly-fishing equipment. Landon also displays enthusiasm in teaching and demonstrating his techniques and on-river knowledge to fellow anglers.  Through trial\, error and perseverance\, he has developed innovative techniques for sighting\, hooking\, and landing selective trout. He is sharing these techniques and secrets in his books and DVD’s.

DESCRIPTION:First one of 2017!!   West Denver TU and Grand Lake Brewing are hosting a fly tying night on Tuesday\, January 17th\, from 7 – 8:30 pm.\nThe location is the Grand Lake Tap Room and Tavern in Old Town Arvada. Besides craft beer they have a full menu. All levels of tiers are welcome. We need some of our advanced tiers to help the people just getting started. Fly donations for WDTU’s Fantasy Raffle are greatly appreciated. \nOne of our members will be tying these flies – Zebra midge ( copper wire and black thread )\, bassie (brass wire and black thread ) and the Rojo ( red thread\, red glass bead\, and floss ).  We will have some floss there. All can be tied on a size 18 – 20 hook. Best hook a 200R hook. You can tie these or any fly you want. \nThe address is 5610 Yukon Street. SUMMARY:March Chapter Meeting - Annual Scholarship Award
DESCRIPTION:The March chapter meeting features our annual award of a scholarship to a CSU graduate student of $4\,000.  In return\, the student is giving a talk at the meeting. \nThe student awardee is Estevan Vigil.  His topic is “Gill lice in trout.” \nEstevan Vigil was born and raised in Denver\, Colorado. Growing up he has always had a passion for the outdoors and enjoyed activities such as fishing\, hunting\, and camping. After graduating high school he chose to pursue a career in natural resources. He moved to Leadville to attend Colorado Mountain College and graduated with an associate degree in natural resource management. After graduating from CMC\, Estevan obtained his first fisheries technician position with Colorado Parks and Wildlife in Grand Junction. While working as a fisheries technician Estevan returned to school at Colorado Mesa University to earn a bachelors degree in biology in 2012. Estevan then received a position as a research associate at Colorado State University researching gill lice. He then decided to pursue a master’s degree in 2014 to continue his research. Estevan has become an expert on gill lice in Colorado and is nearing graduation at CSU. After graduation Estevan will continue his work in Colorado to enhance and protect the future of our fishery resources. Estevan will be presenting his graduate research on life history traits of gill lice and the status of gill lice infections in Colorado. \nInstead of a fly tying demo\, Mark Story will demonstrate how to construct your own lanyard.
