SUMMARY:April Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker:  Austin Parr     Topic: Fly Fishing for Bass. \n          Austin is the sales manager in charge of all product ordering at the Discount Fishing Tackle store.  He is also a local guide and has been fishing Colorado waters almost his entire life.  Austin specializes in guiding stillwater locations\, targeting trout\, walleye\, northern pike\, smallmouth\, and largemouth bass.  In addition to fly fishing lakes\, Austin also does some guiding in the Deckers area and small streams on private ranches.\nAustin is going to give us a different kind of presentation on April 6—how to fly fish for smallmouth and largemouth bass.  We have Chapter members who have sought a change of pace from trout fly fishing\, and Austin is going to describe the tactics\, techniques\, and tackle to do just that.  Austin has given presentations to a number of other fly fishing organizations\, and we feel fortunate to have him for the 6th.  Hope to see you there.\nGuest Tier\, Nick Adler\nAn old friend of our Chapter\, Nick Adler\, will be our guest tier at our April meeting.  Nick is one of the best tiers in the area\, as evidenced by his participation in our Annual Fly Tying Clinic for the past 4 years.  Nick was also the fishing manager for the Golden River Sports fly shop for years.  Be sure to show up early (about 6:30 PM) to see Nick display his fly tying prowess.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:It’s not too late to learn more or get involved with Colorado River Watch. RSVP now to reserve a seat at the River Watch Educational Session with Barb Horn. \nBarb is a Colorado Parks and Wildlife biologist and the Director of River Watch. She has worked with national\, state\, tribes and local entities to protect and restore their waterways for more than 25 years in the role of Colorado Parks and Wildlife Water Quality Specialist.  In response to lack of data in Colorado she developed the River Watch program in the early 1990’s.  River Watch is Real people doing real science for a real purpose.\nTheir mission is to work with voluntary stewards (that’s us!) to monitor water quality and other indicators of watershed health and utilize this high quality data to educate citizens and inform decision makers about the condition of Colorado’s waters. DESCRIPTION:This event is a 3 day celebration of music and adventure sports for the outdoor community\, May 20 – 22.  Athletes from across the US rally to Golden for this three day weekend. Events are centered in and around the Golden Whitewater Park and Lions Park. Now in it’s 6th year\, The Golden Games continues to grow and host a variety of adventure sports\, live music\, demos\, clinics\, gear swaps and more. Adventure Sports to be highlighted include white water kayaking\, stand up paddleboarding (SUP)\, fly fishing\, slack lining\, freestyle rodeo\, kayak slalom racing\, and more.\nThere are over $2\,000 in prizes to be given away in both our pro and an amateur fly fishing contests. SUMMARY:Joseph's Journey Fishing Derby
DESCRIPTION:Joseph’s Journey is dedicated to providing outdoor experiences to children with terminal and life-threatening illnesses. Each June\, WDTU supports the Annual Fishing Derby for Joseph’s Journey at a CPW-stocked lake near Chatfield Reservoir and Waterton Canyon\, south of Littleton\, Colorado.  Volunteers offer fishing instruction and assistance and for children suffering from cancer.  WDTU members also provide lunch for the children and their families.  Security for this event has been tightened.  If you would like to help with the Fishing Derby\, contact Bob Untener directly at 303-517-0892 or Grey1271@hotmail.com. SUMMARY:Women's Fly Fishing Class
DESCRIPTION:Our Chapter is making a concerted effort to get more women involved in the beautiful sport of fly fishing.  Chapter member Geri Reffel is our designated Women’s Fly Fishing Coordinator\, and she is setting up a number of fly fishing classes for women this year.\nShe has scheduled her first class on August 14 at Lake Lehow (Waterton Canyon).  The class will kick off at 9 AM and finish about 2:30 PM\, with a lunch break in between.  Fly rods/reels will be provided for those who don’t have their own equipment.  Because Lake Lehow is a private lake\, no State fishing license is required.\nIf you believe you’re interested in taking this class and/or want more information\, please contact Geri at greffel@yahoo.com.  She can provide you with more details about this class such as what to bring with you and directions to the Lake.  This should be a fun class—tell your friends about it.

DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker: Adam Omernick     Topic: Fishing Northern Colorado.\nAdam is owner of NoCo Fly Fishing and is a Product Designer and Tenkara Guide Trainer with Zen Tenkara and Zen Fly Fishing Gear. He has been fishing all his life and is passionate about teaching and sharing his experience and knowledge with others. \nAs an International Federation of Fly Fishers Certified Casting Instructor\, Adam has worked with people of varying skill levels to introduce them to fly fishing and help them perfect the art of casting. Adam competes in distance fly casting but spends most of his days fishing tenkara. He believes tenkara is the perfect venue for becoming an excellent angler as it allows you to focus on reading water\, fish habitat\, presentation and landing fish. \n  \n\nGuest Fly Tier: Judson Knowles\nJudson has been tying and fly fishing since he was 8 years old. He is a husband\, a father\, a lover of the outdoors\, and a catcher of fish\, sometimes…\nHe was lucky enough to attend the Beginner & Intermediate Fly Tying classes taught by Ray Johnson in Southern California in the late 70’s. The first fish he caught on a fly was a sucker on a Renegade that he had tied in class.  That feeling has never left; the excitement and joy are still present\, even today\, hundreds of trout later. \nJudson says “I am amazed every time I catch a fish on a fly that I have tied. It isn’t so much that I have “fooled” nature\, it is more about something I had offered up\, made of twisted fur and feather that was deemed “good enough” by a wary trout lurking below.  I love to share fly tying with others and gain just as much as I give. I have a heart for soft hackles and woven body flies.  I find fly tying relaxing\, sometimes frustrating but it always rewarding”.

DESCRIPTION:The 36th FIPS Mouche World Fly Fishing Championship is coming to the United States with anglers fishing the free flowing rivers and majestic lakes around Vail.  International anglers representing countries from across the globe will attend this championship event. Here is the event Program.  This event is as strong as its volunteers.  This is an opportunity to observe and learn from the best.  Most volunteers go river side with a competitor. This volunteer is called a controller. The job is not hard and you get to spend time on the water with some of the top fly fishers in the world.  There are also positions to fill supporting our ceremonies and venues. SUMMARY:Clear Creek Clean Up Project
DESCRIPTION:Once again\, our Stream Clean Up effort will be part of the Clear Creek Watershed Festival held at Courtney-Ryley-Cooper Park in Idaho Springs. We will be teamed with volunteers from Cherry Creek Anglers and West Denver TU Chapters. We plan to work cleaning up the stream from Starbucks in the East to Dumont on the West. We need 20 to 30 volunteers to help make this project a success. Please bring waders and work gloves. Garbage bags and safety vests will be provided. \nTo entice you to join us we will have coffee and doughnuts at our Passport Station at 8:30 am.  The work starts at 9:00 am. For your participation you will earn a free BBQ lunch. SUMMARY:Weekend River Watch Sampling Event
DESCRIPTION:Dennis Wiles\, our River Watch Coordinator\, has scheduled a Sunday sampling event for those who can’t attend events during the week.  We will be sampling Vasquez Creek near Winter Park. Volunteers will be meeting at the Park -N- Ride at I-70 and the Morrison exit at 8 am on the 25th. We will then car pool to the site on Vasquez Creek.  After the sampling has been completed\, there will be an opportunity to fish the creek. It should be a fun day of fishing and an educational experience for those new to River Watch.  Contact Dennis if you would like to attend.
