SUMMARY:Joseph's Journey Annual Fishing Derby
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are needed!  This is probably one of the most gratifying events that our Chapter sponsors. No one ever regrets helping out at this outing. \n\n\nJoseph’s Journey is a make-a-wish type organization that offers a day away from the hospital for children who are critically ill accompanied by their families.  Our event is a fishing derby that takes place at lake Lehow\, near Chatfield Reservoir and Waterton Canyon.  CPW stocks the lake in advance of the derby to ensure the young anglers have a great day.  They are provided with a rod and reel.  Our job is to help them with whatever they need: casting\, setting a hook\, landing the fish and releasing it.  For that you will need to bring along a nipper\, forceps and a net. \n\n\nWe also provide lunch and snack for everyone who shows up.  This includes hamburgers\, brats\, hotdogs\, chips\, fruit etc etc.  We need volunteers to help cook. \n\nDue to heightened security concerns\, volunteers must be registered in advance.  If you would like to help\, contact Bob Untener directly at Grey1271@hotmail.com or at 303-517-0892.  He will get you registered as a volunteer and provide all the details.\n\nPS: Volunteers should wear a long-sleeve shirt with a WDTU logo embroidered on it.  If you do not have one\, contact Bob and we will try to help you out\, but do so as soon as possible.

SUMMARY:Golden Games 2018
DESCRIPTION:A 3 day celebration of music and adventure sports for the outdoor community\, May 18 – 20.  Athletes from across the US rally to Golden for these events. Activities are centered in and around the Golden Whitewater Park and Lions Park. Now in its 7th year\, The Golden Games continues to grow and host a variety of adventure sports\, live music\, demos\, clinics\, gear swaps and more. Sports to be highlighted include white water kayaking\, stand up paddle boarding\, fly fishing\, slack lining\, freestyle rodeo\, kayak slalom racing\, and more. \nThe fly fishing contests are on May 20th. There are prizes to be given away in both our pro and an amateur fly fishing contests. It’s a fun day with a BBQ included.  If you don’t wish to compete\, being a controller is really fascinating way to shadow an angler on clear Creek for two hours\, measure his fish\, see how he approaches the river\, and the bugs he chooses.  You can check it all out and register to compete or volunteer at thegoldengames.com\, or call Troy Harcourt 303-548-5881 troy@thegoldengames.com. \nWest Denver TU will have a booth promoting our conservation efforts.  The Golden Games fishing contest is sponsored by Arbor Anglers of Golden. \n\n

SUMMARY:May Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Speaker:  Peter Jaacks.\nTopic:  Fly Fishing Alaska.\nGuest Tier: Vinnie Pachelli. \nThis meeting also features the Fantasy Raffle drawing! \nIn addition to the above\, Ben Hegelson of 5280 Angler guide service will give a short presentation about the “Mind the Redd” movement to protect wild fish reproduction. \n \nBorn and raised in Colorado\, Peter Jaacks started casting a fly rod as a teenager on the mountain streams and lakes of the Rocky Mountains. While attending Colorado State University\, Peter’s backyard expanded to the Western US\, spending free time from school chasing secret skiing glades and remote trout streams. Upon graduating from CSU\, Peter drove from Colorado to Alaska and spent the summer backpacking\, fishing\, and rafting around south-central Alaska. Upon returning to the lower 48\, Peter co-lead a National Geographic funded expedition floating the entire length of the Elwha River on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington to document the dam removal project and returning fishery there. In 2014\, Peter started working for Alaska’s Wild River Guides\, sharing adventures and fish stories with guests while moving across the awe-inspiring landscapes of southwest Alaska. When he is not fishing\, Peter can be found at the end of a long skin-track\, searching for powder in the Colorado backcountry. \nVinnie Pachelli is a member of WDTU and avid outdoorsman.

SUMMARY:Rainbow Falls Fishing Day!!
DESCRIPTION:On March 10\, 2018 West Denver will combine a fund-raising event with a great day of fishing! Rainbow Falls is a ranch located off Highway 67\, about 12-13 miles south of Deckers. It was once the site of Colorado’s first hatchery (circa 1875). The ranch consists of 100 acres of land situated in a beautiful valley. There are 9 lakes on the property\, and about 1 ½ miles of stream courses through the valley as well. The lakes and stream are fed by a spring that has a constant temperature of 51 degrees. \nA family owns the ranch\, and it has converted the property into an exclusive fishing club. The lakes and stream are stocked periodically with browns\, rainbows\, tiger trout and Donaldson steelheads. \nCost for the day is $200 per person; this includes snacks in the morning\, lunch and drinks (non-alcoholic).  There are a number of pavilions (with tables) in the valley that will allow you to rest and eat.  If you’re interested in attending\, note that registrations will be accepted for the first 40 fully paid registrants.  To register\, please send a check issued to West Denver Trout Unlimited for $200 per angler to Matt Rivera‘s attention at 8189 Webster Street\, Arvada\, CO  80003.   Please include your email address so that your registration can be confirmed and to receive final instructions for the day. \nFor more information\, contact either Matt Rivera (303-204-5069) or Jon Weimer (303-830-1609).

SUMMARY:February Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker: David Oonk\nSpeaker:  Ryan Anderson. \nTopic:  Not Yet Specified.\nGuest Tier: from Arbor Anglers. \n  \nRyan Anderson will be giving away a float trip at the meeting! \nDavid Oonk is a PhD student at the University of Colorado’s Center for Science and Technology Policy Research studying how science influences the policy process around issues of energy production\, environmental conservation and public health. More specifically\, the research focuses on how citizens and communities can engage in ‘citizen science’ and how those efforts contribute to decision-making. He will speak for a short time about the Backcountry Limnology Project\, a citizen science project. \nRyan Anderson has been guiding for 17 years\, 2 seasons in Alaska as a fly out fly fishing guide and 15 seasons here on the North Platte. Ryan has fished all over the world but truly loves his home water in Wyoming. \nHe is a Casper native that grew up learning how to cast (in the wind) from his father and grandfather. He had a fly rod in his hand at the age of 5. By 12 he was Dennis the Menace but armed with a fly rod instead of a sling shot. The trout in the small mountain streams around Casper didn’t stand a chance against this little “trout punk”. \nNow 35\, Ryan is the owner of Wyoming Fly Fishing \, Wyoming’s premier guide service. Ryan enjoys the outdoors\, Loves to be on the river and can always have a good time. As he puts it “I am lucky because I have been able to combine my passion with my livelihood. I knew what I wanted to do from a very young age\, I wanted to fly fish. Guiding someone into a big trout\, and netting it\, is the closest thing I’ve found to fishing myself. For me it has the same excitement\, same adrenaline\, everything. I love this Job!” \nSomeone asked Ryan once what he would be if he wasn’t a fly fishing guide and he said “screwed”.
