SUMMARY:Chapter Meeting: Subaru-able Venues in South Park and Understanding Native Brook Trout Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Michele White and George Valentine Present! \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nGeorge Valentine is our CSU Scholarship recipient for this year.He is a Master’s student in the Fish\, Wildlife\, and Conservation Biology department. George plans on pursuing a career as a federal fisheries biologist. \n\n\n\nGeorge will be discussing his research into brook trout resilience in their native range\, the eastern US. \n\n\n\n\nDrive\, Park\, and Fly Fish the High Country. \n\n\n\n\nMany brookie fishing venues in South Park are easily accessible in a sedan type of car with public access to streamside fishing with parking\, toilets\, and maintained footpaths. These high alpine creeks and ponds are a great way to escape the summer fishing pressure we see at better known fly fishing venues in South Park\, such as the Dream Stream and Eleven Mile Canyon. Another positive aspect of fly fishing for brookies at these higher elevations\, is that the air temperature is cooler and the air quality is wonderful above the haze of smoke during wildfire season. \n\n\n\nMichele White is a retired geologist. She owns Tumbling Trout fly shop in Lake George\, Colorado and is a professional fly fishing guide. She has been fly fishing and rowing a river dory with her husband on the Great Rivers of the West for more than 20 years. She also serves as V.P. of Education for the Pikes Peak Chapter of Trout Unlimited in Colorado Springs and volunteers on regional conservation projects.

SUMMARY:"Cast Around" Night with Backcountry Hunters and Anglers Tuesday\, May 17
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re a newbie or an experienced fly angler\, we’re always working towards that perfect cast. If you need some incentive to improve your presentation\, increase your catch rate\, earn some bragging rights – or you’re just dipping your toes in the water and wanting some instruction – join the West Denver Chapter of Trout Unlimited and members of the Colorado Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers for an evening “on the water” May 17th at O’Kane Park in Lakewood. There will be setups to test out\, courses to test your accuracy\, distance challenges\, and plenty of bystanders to give their 2-cents on why you can’t fix that tailing loop. While “casting” will be the focus\, a person’s arm can get tired\, so we’ll have beverages of all varieties\, something to curb your appetite and a spot to relax and share some lies. If you’re new to fly fishing\, don’t feel intimidated – we’ll have loaner rods and a few folks on hand to give basic instruction throughout the evening. This is the first in what will be a regular gathering with themes and featured presenters. If you happen to have any suggestions for an upcoming Cast Around\, or want to share your expertise\, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Justin Bubenik at justin@flycurious.org.

SUMMARY:Chapter Meeting\, Fishing Yellowstone's Hot Spots
DESCRIPTION:At the conclusion of this meeting\, we will be drawing the winners of the Fantasy Raffle. \n\n\n\n\nPaul Bunker’s first visit to the park in 2003 with his brother John was a death march through Yellowstone\, spent mostly driving around the park\, wondering where to fish. After passing up places where there were 1\,000s of fish and fishing in places where there were no fish\, Paul decided that no one should have to go on such a death march again. After 12 years fishing with the park’s volunteer fly fishing program and the past five on his own\, Paul has put together a series of “X” marks the spot locations that any angler can find and have a reasonable chance to catch a Yellowstone/West Slope Cutthroat\, and a few grayling as well. He’ll leave how and what to fish for them up to you and the local guides. \n\n\n\n\nPaul Bunker is a West Denver TU member and considers Yellowstone National Park his “home” waters. After spending 20 years in the Air Force\, and then another 20 at Eagle Claw Fishing Tackle here in Denver\, Paul’s been filling his retirement days advocating for the park’s volunteer fly fishing program and working with the TU Native Trout Workgroup (TU NTWG) to help restore\, conserve\, and protect native trout\, especially the Yellowstone Cutthroat (YCT). He was the TU NTWG lead person for the Get to Know Your Native YCT poster which he will have at the meeting.
