DESCRIPTION:Speaker:  Michele White\nTopic:  “Lesser Known Fly Fishing Venues in South Park”\nGuest Tier: Phil Iwane \nMichele White will be presenting her fishing atlas\, “Lesser Known Fly Fishing Venues in South Park” – a complete compilation of every public access on the South Platte river system including all of its tributaries\, (Tarryall and Lost Creek) within the South Park Basin. The intention of my atlas is to relieve some of the daily fishing pressure that exists at the better known fly fishing venues: Dream Stream and Eleven Mile Canyon. \nMichele White is a retired international exploration geologist. She owns Tumbling Trout fly shop in Lake George\, Colorado and is a professional fly fishing guide. She has been fly fishing and rowing a dory (she is a certified boat handler) on the great rivers of the west for 20 years. Michele is a contributing editor for Mountain Gazette\, (thanks to John Fayhee)\, and has been published in Discover the Outdoors\, EQUUS\, Fly Fishing World\, Native People’s Magazine\, New Tribal Dawn\, and The Aquarian. \nMichele’s stories are included three anthologies: \n\n“Colorado Mountain Dogs”\, published by WestWinds Press\, 2014;\n“Comeback Wolves: Western Writers Speak for Wolves in the Southern Rockies”\, published by Johnson Books\, 2005; and\n“Hell’s Half Mile: River Runners’ Tales of Hilarity and Misadventure”\, published by Breakaway Books\, 2004.\n\nIn addition to her fishing atlas\, “Lesser Known Fly Fishing Venues\,” she also has another book\, “Eulogies and Dead Horses”\, which is a collection of reflective essays about life while fishing and working as geologist all over the world. \n  \nPhil Iwane\, our tier for October\, Phil says he is artistic by nature\, and views each fly he ties as a piece of art. He has tied hundreds of patterns but now has narrowed it down to flies that catch fish.  Umpqua has added his Iwan-e-Dun extended body mayfly series to their offerings. He is a Whiting Farm Ambassador as well as a Umpqua Signature Fly Designer. \n  \nKarin Miller from Zin Fly Fishing and April Archer from SaraBella Fly Fishing. They will have a table is and have their equipment there. They will send you emails about the opportunities. If you volunteer 40 hours a year\, they will give you a Colorado Parks Pass. River Watch volunteer time qualifies under the CPW Volunteer Program.

He began his fly fishing career fishing the Rocky Mountain West\, and has been toting a fly rod for better than four decades. \nAs a retired teacher and coach\, Duane has a unique\, systematic approach to the river that he has used as the basis of his guiding for the last twelve years. This systematic approach\, derived from guiding countless days on highly pressured\, technical waters\, has been refined over time\, and is easily understood. \nWhen he’s not guiding\, Duane spends his time teaching fly fishing classes\, blogging\, tying\, speaking\, and writing. When he’s not teaching\, writing or guiding\, you’ll find him on the river. \nHis latest presentation: The Perfect Drift\, Easy As X\,Y\,Z delves into the three dimensions involved within the perfect drift. DESCRIPTION:Speaker: David Nickum\nTopic: What CTU is doing now in the State\nGuest Tier: \n David Nickum is the Executive Director of Colorado Trout Unlimited. David coordinates state-level TU conservation efforts on issues ranging from whirling disease to water quality protection. Under his leadership\, Colorado TU has successfully reformed state whirling disease policy\, secured passage of legislation strengthening Colorado’s in-stream flow program\, and conducted many on-the-ground restoration projects for stream habitat and native trout recovery. He is the author of Whirling Disease in the United States\, a TU report summarizing the state of the science on whirling disease\, and co-author of Saving A Stream\, a primer on how to conduct coldwater habitat improvement projects. David holds a BA in Public Policy from Duke University. DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Kasey Pregler\nTopic: Her Graduate studies research\n \nKasey Pregler has been awarded the West Denver Chapter – Trout Unlimited Scholarship for the 2018-2019 academic year.\nKasey is a PhD student from Colorado. \nShe has received two teaching awards and best presentation awards from previous institutions during graduate school. She was also awarded the John E. Skinner Memorial Award from the American Fisheries Society. \nA LIITLE BIT ABOUT ME\nI am originally from Connecticut where I completed undergrad and my masters at the University of Connecticut. My research focuses on fish community patterns and the demographic patterns that shape these communities. Additionally\, I also study the genetic integrity of rear-edge trout populations and the implications of historical stocking events\, as well as our ability to accurately characterize trout population trends based on current monitoring protocols. \nWHAT I HOPE TO DO\nThrough my teaching and research experience\, I would like to attain a faculty position in academia. It is my hope to mentor both graduate and undergraduate students and develop my own research program. I would like to pass on the knowledge and career advice my mentors have bestowed upon me to future fisheries professionals. \nMY PERSONAL THANKS\nThank you for your scholarship support. This scholarship allows me to attend scientific conferences in order to gain additional skills in my field and network with other professionals.
