DESCRIPTION:Guest Tier:  Robby Capps        \nSpeaker: Rob Brozovich                 \nTopic: Fishing High Mountain Lakes      \nOur Guest Tier is Robby Capps\, the fishing manager of Rise Fly Shop in Golden. \nOur guest speaker is Rob Brozovich\, the owner of the Clear Creek Outdoors shop in Idaho Springs.  Rob is one of our guardian angels\, continually providing products and services for our fund-raising events. \nRob’s presentation is going to focus on fishing high mountain lakes\, mostly in Colorado\, but he’ll also talk about his expeditions to the Wind River area in Wyoming. Rob is not only an avid angler but an excellent photographer\, and no doubt his presentation will incorporate some of his outstanding photographs. We had Rob as a speaker a few years ago\, and it turned out to be one of that season’s best presentations.

DESCRIPTION:Traditionally\, the Board has held a party for its directors. This year\, however\, the Board has decided to have party for ALL Chapter members. The format will be pot luck—i.e.\, bring a side dish (e.g.\, salad\, dessert\, soup\, etc.). The Chapter will provide the meats and drinks. We’ll have an optional White Elephant gift exchange\, and we’re asking attendees to bring a can or two of food for the Arvada Food Bank. The festivities will be held at the American Mountaineering Center in Golden. Doors open at 5:30 PM and dinner will be between 6 and 9 PM. Duane is an author and a guide for Minturn Anglers. He will present “A Systematic Approach to Fly Fishing” based on his latest book.\nDuane began fly fishing in the mountain lakes and streams in Arizona over forty years ago. He has been fly fishing Colorado since 1982\, and spent the majority of his days guiding on the Front Range\, specifically the South Platte tail waters.\nAs a former teacher and coach\, Duane relies on his ability to breakdown the finer points of angling to help his clients quickly master the art of fly fishing. Duane has written The Fly Fishers’ Playbook\, A Systematic Approach to Nymph Fly Fishing. The second edition is newly released\, and autographed copies will be available for sale.\nWhen he’s not guiding\, writing\, filming\, or speaking\, you’ll notice Duane on some river\, somewhere. Don’t let his laid-back approach fool you\, when he’s on the river his attention to detail and building-block approach to fishing is calm yet intense. Although his motto is “Fear No Water”\, you’ll share the sights\, sounds\, and joys that come from simply being in the great outdoors.

DESCRIPTION:Guest Tier & Speaker:  Richard Pilatzke \nTopic: Stillwater Fly Fishing for Dummies\nRichard Pilatzke lives in Littleton\, Colorado with his wife Cheryl and border collie mix dog Bella.  He has been fly tying and fly fishing for over 35 years. For the last twenty years\, he has specialized in tying flies for and fishing high mountain lakes in Colorado. He especially likes fishing damselfly and dragonfly hatches and terrestrials. \nHe does many fly tying demonstrations at events like The Fly Fishing Show\, The International Sportsman’s Expo and at fly tying clinics across the region.  Richard’s flies have been exhibited at the Boulder Art Museum and the Prichard Art Museum in Idaho Falls. He is currently a member of the Regal Engineering\, Unibobber and Wasatch Angling Pro Staffs. Richard and his fly patterns have been featured in books by Gary LaFontaine\, Pat Dorsey\, Rick Takahashi\, Marty Bartholomew\, and Jim Schollmeyer and also in Southwest Fly Fishing and Colorado Outdoors. His biggest influences in fly tying have been Gary LaFontaine\, Jack Dennis\, John Betts\, Craig Matthews\, and Al Makkai. What Richard likes best about fly tying is the creative aspect\, especially searching out little-known materials to create new patterns.

DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker\, Adam Herdich\, WDTU Scholarship Recipient \nAdam Herdich Collects Field Samples \nTopic: Effects of Large Wood on Trout Populations \nAdam is this year’s recipient of WDTU’s annual scholarship to a CSU Master of Science degree student in the Department of Fish\, Wildlife\, and Conservation. The recipient is chosen by a faculty committee\, and each winner presents the results of his/her research at a chapter meeting. \nAdam grew up in Loveland\, Colorado fly-fishing the Big Thompson River where he became passionate about research in aquatic ecology. He is currently completing his thesis and publishing his results on the effect of in-stream large wood on trout populations in eastern slope Rocky Mountain streams. Results from this research will have direct impacts on habitat management for salmonids here in Colorado and throughout the Rocky Mountain region. DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker:  Austin Parr     Topic: Fly Fishing for Bass. \n          Austin is the sales manager in charge of all product ordering at the Discount Fishing Tackle store.  He is also a local guide and has been fishing Colorado waters almost his entire life.  Austin specializes in guiding stillwater locations\, targeting trout\, walleye\, northern pike\, smallmouth\, and largemouth bass.  In addition to fly fishing lakes\, Austin also does some guiding in the Deckers area and small streams on private ranches.\nAustin is going to give us a different kind of presentation on April 6—how to fly fish for smallmouth and largemouth bass.  We have Chapter members who have sought a change of pace from trout fly fishing\, and Austin is going to describe the tactics\, techniques\, and tackle to do just that.  Austin has given presentations to a number of other fly fishing organizations\, and we feel fortunate to have him for the 6th.  Hope to see you there.\nGuest Tier\, Nick Adler\nAn old friend of our Chapter\, Nick Adler\, will be our guest tier at our April meeting.  Nick is one of the best tiers in the area\, as evidenced by his participation in our Annual Fly Tying Clinic for the past 4 years.  Nick was also the fishing manager for the Golden River Sports fly shop for years.  Be sure to show up early (about 6:30 PM) to see Nick display his fly tying prowess.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:It’s not too late to learn more or get involved with Colorado River Watch. RSVP now to reserve a seat at the River Watch Educational Session with Barb Horn. \nBarb is a Colorado Parks and Wildlife biologist and the Director of River Watch. She has worked with national\, state\, tribes and local entities to protect and restore their waterways for more than 25 years in the role of Colorado Parks and Wildlife Water Quality Specialist.  In response to lack of data in Colorado she developed the River Watch program in the early 1990’s.  River Watch is Real people doing real science for a real purpose.\nTheir mission is to work with voluntary stewards (that’s us!) to monitor water quality and other indicators of watershed health and utilize this high quality data to educate citizens and inform decision makers about the condition of Colorado’s waters. DESCRIPTION:This event is a 3 day celebration of music and adventure sports for the outdoor community\, May 20 – 22.  Athletes from across the US rally to Golden for this three day weekend. Events are centered in and around the Golden Whitewater Park and Lions Park. Now in it’s 6th year\, The Golden Games continues to grow and host a variety of adventure sports\, live music\, demos\, clinics\, gear swaps and more. Adventure Sports to be highlighted include white water kayaking\, stand up paddleboarding (SUP)\, fly fishing\, slack lining\, freestyle rodeo\, kayak slalom racing\, and more.\nThere are over $2\,000 in prizes to be given away in both our pro and an amateur fly fishing contests. SUMMARY:Joseph's Journey Fishing Derby
DESCRIPTION:Joseph’s Journey is dedicated to providing outdoor experiences to children with terminal and life-threatening illnesses. Each June\, WDTU supports the Annual Fishing Derby for Joseph’s Journey at a CPW-stocked lake near Chatfield Reservoir and Waterton Canyon\, south of Littleton\, Colorado.  Volunteers offer fishing instruction and assistance and for children suffering from cancer.  WDTU members also provide lunch for the children and their families.  Security for this event has been tightened.  If you would like to help with the Fishing Derby\, contact Bob Untener directly at 303-517-0892 or Grey1271@hotmail.com. He will get you registered as a volunteer and provide the event details.
